Snake Unblocked is a arcade game where the player maneuvers a growing line that becomes a primary obstacle to itself.
Nokia decided to release a version of the classic snake game on its mobile devices. Since then, the format has exploded in popularity, with hundreds of different versions available on the various app-stores. This version of the game is in HTML5, and therefore playable on any device with a web-browser.
Gameplay of Snake Unblocked
The player controls a dot, square, or object on a bordered plane. As it moves forward, it leaves a trail behind, resembling a moving snake. In some games, the end of the trail is in a fixed position, so the snake continually gets longer as it moves. In another common scheme, the snake has a specific length, so there is a moving tail a fixed number of units away from the head. The player loses when the snake runs into the screen border, other obstacle, or itself.
Gameplay comes in two major variants of Snake Unblocked:
- In the first, which is most often a two-player game, there are multiple snakes on the playfield. Each player attempts to block the other so the opponent runs into an existing trail and loses. Surround for the Atari VCS is an example of this type. The Light Cycles segment of the Tron arcade game is a single-player version where the other “snakes” are AI controlled.
- In the second variant, a sole player attempts to eat items by running into them with the head of the snake. Each item eaten makes the snake longer, so avoiding collision with the snake becomes progressively more difficult. Examples: Nibbler, Snake Byte.
Tips and Tricks for Snake Unblocked
Master the sharp turns. A good trick to have under your belt as you play Snake Unblocked is being able to turn on a dime. Since the snake is so speedy, crashing can happen before you can react. The more you play, try to master those sharp turns to narrowly escape hitting a wall.
Be patient. It can be tempting to grab the apples as fast as you can, but if you narrowly miss an apple, it’s better to wait until your snake tail has moved away from it before going in for another pass.
Hug the wall. As you play snake, your tail will keep growing and growing with every apple you eat. An easy trick to avoid crashing into the walls or your tail is to trace the perimeter of the screen. This keeps the rest of the field open and easy to navigate.
Utilize the zig-zag. The snake’s ultimate move! If you find your tail getting a bit too long in Snake Unblocked, quickly shift from side to side to create a zig-zag pattern on the screen. Moving this way will buy you some time as the rest of the tail catches up.
