Hot Dog Buns: Cooking 101

Eating chili for dinner is great, but sometimes you need something a little bit different. Sometimes, you need a chili cheese dog! Okay, sometimes “I” need a chili cheese dog…and these are the perfect buns for the job!

These are not your typical light and fluffy hot dog buns that you find in the grocery store…..not that I have anything against light and fluffy hot dog buns! These are a stiffer, more substantial buns that can withstand the addition of lots of toppings…..

These are the kind of hot dog buns that you use a knife and fork to eat 🙂  No wimpy buns here! They are sturdy enough to also be used as sandwich rolls. Slice them, scoop them out, cut them however you would like…..

How to make Homemade Hot Dog Buns with a bread machine:

Place water, milk, oil, salt, and sugar in the pan of a bread machine…..

Add the flour, make a well in the center, and add the yeast…..

Place in the bread machine and use the dough setting. When the machine beeps, unplug and allow to continue to rise for 30 additional minutes.

Remove dough to a well floured work surface and divide into 9 pieces {mine were 3 ounces each}…..

Shape dough into a ball, then roll into cylinders, 4 1/2″ in length…..

Flatten slightly in the center and place on a silpat/parchment lined baking sheet…..

Cover with a towel and allow to rise until almost doubled, about 45 minutes.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Just before baking, brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash and sprinkle with seeds if using…..

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool…..

As you can probably tell, they are much larger than regular hot dog buns. Your dog to bun ratio will be completely off if you are only adding ketchup! That is what the light, fluffy buns from the bakery are for. Once I find that recipe, I will add it to the collection, lol

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup warm water 105 - 115 degrees
  • 1 cup warm milk 105 - 115 degrees
  • 1 Tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon active dry yeast

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 Tablespoon cold water
  • poppy seeds or sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions
