Do you love hot dogs? Please say you do, otherwise this post will be of no interest to you, LOL. I have a bizarre love affair with hot dogs that started back when I was in high school. During my freshman year I would come home and eat a hot dog EVERY day! Not these loaded up California Style Hot Dogs, just a hot dog with ketchup and a Dr, Pepper.

I am all grown up now, and my hot dogs are growing up as well. This week’s version is a California Dog – an all beef hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with guacamole and Monterrey Jack cheese. No, this is not an “official” hot dog that is made only in California. I just tend to call any meal that includes avocados, bacon, and Monterrey Jack cheese…..”California”! Like my California Burgers and California Chicken Club Sandwiches.

I guess I could have gone with California inspired hot dogs, but that has too many words. 😉 Not that this recipe doesn’t have a bunch of options. Keep reading and I will explain. 😉

How to make California Style Hot Dogs:

Option 1:

Place hot dog on a microwave safe plate and heat on HIGH for 20 to 25 seconds. Wrap hot dog with pre-cooked bacon {that you just happen to have on hand} and place in a hot dog bun…..

Top with guacamole or mashed avocado and shredded Monterrey Jack cheese…..

Option 2:

Wrap an uncooked slice of bacon around the hot dog and place in a preheated 350 degree oven. Bake for 20 to 25  minutes until cooked. I thought of this option after I had finished off all of the guacamole, so sorry but there are no images. Place your hot dog on a bun and top with guacamole and cheese…..

Did you see that Applegate Farms was bought by Hormel? I am soooooo upset!!! The only way that I can justify my ridiculous love of hot dogs is by only eating organic, uncured, sulfite and nitrate free hot dogs, and I am afraid that Hormel will ruin that and load them full of MSG and other crap like they do all of their other products {SPAM, Dinty Moore Stew}. 🙁 Have you ever noticed that I don’t eat pork? It’s not because I don’t like it, it’s because I only have access to Hormel products until the farmer’s markets start up each summer!

So I will be on the lookout for a new favorite “healthy” hot dog…..any suggestions? Go ahead, you can laugh, that is a pretty funny statement. 😉

Every good hot dog deserves an awesome Hot Dog Bun, and some delicious Guacamole.

The recipe is pretty generic, because it really does depend on how many hot dogs you are making. A good rule of thumb is to double the amount of microwave cooking time, minus 5 seconds per hot dog. If you put 4 hot dogs in for 1:50….they will explode! Start with 1:30 and see how that works. And yes, every microwave is different. 😉

Enjoy!!

  3. Looks very delicious! I’m not a big hot dog fan, but since it has guacamole on it I would say that would be a good incentive for me to be willing to try it.

  4. I’m not a big fan of hot dogs, but we do have them occasionally in the summer and my kiddos love them! I have to have an “adult” versions because ketchup and mustard just do not do it for me! 🙂 However, guacamole and bacon?! Ummmm, yeah!!! We will have to have California Dogs for dinner one night! 🙂
