Ingredients needed
- Tequila – silver or reposado is the best tequila for margaritas, but any kind of tequila will work. Just choose one that is high-quality.
- Freshly squeezed blood oranges – buy a 5-pound bag if you can so you have plenty of juice for drinks and leftovers to garnish.
- Freshly squeezed lime juice – Lime juice is also important in this drink. You really do need to squeeze fresh limes for the best tasting cocktail. Do not use the little green plastic lime juice from the grocery store! They are filled with preservatives and will make your drink taste bitter!
- Orange Liqueur – my favorite is Cointreau, but you can also use triple sec or Grand Marnier.
- A mixture of Himalayan pink salt and sugar for the rim gives this drink the perfect sweet and salty finish.
- A sweetener is optional depending on your preferences. Add a bit of simple syrup or agave nectar if desired.
- Ice cubes to chill and to serve your drink.
- A cocktail shaker to mix your cocktail.

How to make blood orange margaritas on the rocks
Mix the salt and sugar together on a small plate that is slightly larger than the rim of your glass. Rub a squeezed lime rind around the rim of your glasses, then roll the rim around at a 45-degree angle in the salt and sugar mixture to coat.
Add ice cubes to your glass and set aside. Place a good amount of ice in your cocktail shaker.
Add the tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice and lime juice.
Secure the lid and shake for 30 seconds to combine. Strain into ice filled glasses, garnish with orange and lime wheels or wedges and serve immediately.
Recipe Notes & Tips
- I used Cabo Wabo Tequila, but any high quality silver/blanco {clear} tequila will work.
- Adjust the sweetness to your own personal tastes by adding agave nectar or simple syrup.
- Trim the stirrer/straws with scissors if necessary to fit your glass.
