In honor of National Love your Pet Day and the upcoming Dog Biscuit Day on Saturday, I have included a recipe for a healthy treat for your beloved canines. They actually don’t taste that bad. Yes, I tried one. They taste like an unsweetened cookie that has been overcooked. But they are for our furry friends, not for us!

Arlo and Oreo waited very patiently for me to finish making their Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits…..

They LOVE these treats!!! They make up excuses to go outside, just so they can get another one. Arlo will run to the door and insist on going outside. He will then walk in a circle on the patio, and come back to the door. When I let him in, he will look at me, look at the treat box, look at me again, fidgeting back and forth until he gets another treat. Yeah, I’m a sucker. I fall for his cute little face every time. Oreo will just wait patiently for him to do all of the work, knowing that she will get one too! 🙂

How to make Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits:

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silpat. Set aside.

In a large bowl, mix together the egg, peanut butter, banana, and honey. Stir in the flour, oat bran, and oats.

Roll out dough on a “rice” floured surface, to 1/4″ thickness.

Use a cookie cutter to cut into desired shapes. {I have this Dog Bone Cutter set – affiliate link}

Place on prepared baking sheet and brush with egg white.

Bake until golden brown and dry, 30 – 40 minutes depending on size of biscuit. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.

Arlo just turned 3 in January, and Oreo will be 13 in July. I did not know until after we got Arlo, that dogs have allergies just like humans do. Oreo has been on thyroid medicine for years, and has really dry, flaky skin. The vet suggested changing her diet by eliminating wheat, dairy, soy, and corn. Her coat is doing much better, so I will continue down this same path with all future dogs…..just in case.

The dog food manufacturers are starting to make “all-natural foods”, but many of them still contain wheat. Finding dog treats is still a little harder. Sometimes I find it easier just to bake my own treats. Besides, we humans like variety, so why wouldn’t they?

Enjoy!!
